The Credit Union Story

Beechview Antigonish Credit Union movement traces its origins to Nova Scotia in Canda, to a small town called Antigonish. We took our name, Beechview from the surrounding Streets, where, we set up our offices over 50 years ago and decided to include Antigonish to celebrate the town where we orginated from.

Beechview Antigonish Credit Union is an indepentant Credit Union and the leading Credit Union within our common bond. Our Independance means we do not pay any affiliation fee to any central body. Also we do not pay expensive insurance premiums. Our profit is paid back  to our members in dividends and interest rebate.

The objects of Beechview Antigonish Credit Union are:

  1. To promote thrift amongst members by accumulation of savings
  2. Creation of sources of credit for the benefit of its member at a fair and reasonable rate of interest
  3. The use and control of member's saving for their mutual benefit

All this subject to the provisions laid down by law.

A Credit Union is a democratic, financial co-operative owned and controlled by its own members. Each Credit Union is run only to benefit its members, all of whom have something in common - the common bond.

The Credit Union movement was introduced into Ireland in 1958 by a number of dedicated pioneers.

Since then, the Credit Union philosophy of mutual self-help has proved very popular, and there are now over 500 Credit Unions  throughout the country.

In Ireland over two million members have recognized the value of credit unions, and have savings approaching several billion euro/pounds with their credit unions. There are thousands employed in the sector and many more thousands are volunteers involved in the movement.
